JSON to Excel converter

Paste JSON and download a real Excel workbook: numbers stay numbers, leading zeros are kept, the header is bold and frozen, and an object of lists becomes one sheet per list.

Runs in your browser. Nothing you type or open on this page is uploaded; it works with your connection switched off once the page has loaded.

How to use it

  1. Paste JSON, or open a .json file (it is read in the browser, not uploaded).
  2. Name the sheet if you like. An object whose values are lists becomes one sheet per list, named by its keys.
  3. Press Download .xlsx and open the file in Excel, Numbers, LibreOffice or Google Sheets.

Need this in bulk, or from code?

The same job is one HTTP call to our API: POST /v1/convert/json-to-xlsx. 100 calls a day free with no key; paid plans from $9 a month. One key works for every API.

Questions

Is this a real Excel file or a renamed CSV?

A real .xlsx workbook (Office Open XML), with typed cells, a bold header row that stays in view while you scroll, and column widths sized to the content.

Will it mangle my ZIP codes, IDs or dates?

No. Cells take their type from the JSON: a JSON number becomes a number, true/false a boolean, and a JSON string stays text exactly as written, so 01234 keeps its leading zero and a date string is not reinterpreted.

Can text that starts with = run as a formula?

No. The workbook contains no formulas at all; "=SUM(A1)" is stored as the text you see. That also closes off spreadsheet formula injection from untrusted data.

What if the data will not fit?

You get a plain error instead of a broken file: Excel allows 32,767 characters per cell, 16,384 columns and 1,048,576 rows, and sheet names of up to 31 characters without : \ / ? * [ ].

Is my data uploaded?

No. The workbook is built by this page in your browser. It needs a browser from the last few years (it uses the built-in compression the .xlsx format relies on).
